The Sport Pilot certificate was created in September 2004 after years of work by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). The intent of the new license was to lower the barriers of entry into aviation and make flying more affordable and accessible to aviation enthusiasts. New Mexico Flight Schools recommends this course as a great place to start your training and is the fastest way to fly solo in your own aircraft in New Mexico.
Before a trainee can start the solo phase of flight training, a Student Sport Pilot Certificate must be issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These may be obtained from an FAA Flight Standards District Office or FAA Designated Pilot Examiner. New Mexico Flight Schools will make sure that the flight school you train with gives you all of the appropriate information to make this fast, easy and affordable. The flying lesson experts at New Mexico Flight Schools are standing by to get you started today!
Just like private pilots who are certificated to fly standard category aircraft (airplanes), the sport pilot has to go through a "final exam" or what is known in the aviation world as a "checkride" to finally obtain their license to fly with a passenger on board their aircraft and operate as pilot in command or PIC. This is done after the sport pilot candidate finishes all of their required aeronautical experience, including required training, and receives a passing sport pilot knowledge test report.
Time in light-sport aircraft can be used towards the experience requirement of other ratings on higher certificate types which makes the Sport License such a great place to start.
